AV News - August 31, 2017 - SALMON FEST:

Alberni festival moves to Tyee Landing for 46th year

New location a chance for change, says festival president Dan Washington

The Port Alberni Salmon Festival has a new home for its 46th year: Tyee Landing beside Fisherman's Wharf.

Salmon Fest has traditionally taken place at Clutesi Haven Marina, home to the Alberni Valley Tyee Club-the first group to run the annual fishing derby. The salmon festival society learned before the 45th Salmon Fest in 2016 that holding the event at Clutesi Haven wouldn't be possible for 2017, read more.......

After what was a lean, chinookless 2013 for the Port Alberni Salmon Festival, two changes to this year's Labour Day weekend event should have anglers flocking to Port Alberni.

For one, participants will again be able to catch chinook this year, according to Salmon Fest president Dan Washington.

"It's subject to DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) regulations," Washington said, noting the fisheries department has changed its mind in the 11th hour before.

"But as of right this moment, yes, we're back to chinook."

Clutesi Haven Marina will become the centre of Port Alberni this weekend, as locals and out-of-towners will converge there for the 42nd annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival.

Salmon Festival president Dan Washington said volunteers worked hard the days before to set up the site.

"We're always nervous at this point whether things will get set up in time," he said.

This year's festival will be coho-only for the first time since 2000, due to a low chinook return forecast.

Washington said that in 2000, the festival had 1,030 entrances. In comparison, the 2012 festival had more than 1,700 entrances.

A small projected chinook run for the summer of 2013 has prompted Port Alberni Salmon Festival officials to adopt a coho-only format for the 42nd annual festival on Labour Day weekend.

“There are only 16,700 predicted (chinook) returns, which will give us enough eggs for the hatchery and the river,” said Bob Cole, past chair-man of the Alberni Sportfish Advisory Committee.
